second pistel off S. Paul to Timothe.
The first Chapter.
- 1:1
- Paul an apostle of Jesu Christ, by the will of God, to preach the promise of life, which life is in Christ Jesu.
- 1:2
- To Timothy his|my| beloved son. Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the father, and from Jesus{Iesu} Christ our Lord.
- 1:3
- I thank God, whom I serve from mine elders with pure conscience, that without ceasing I make mention of thee in my prayers night and day,
- 1:4
- desiring|and long| to see thee, mindful of|when i remember| thy tears: so that I am filled with joy,
- 1:5
- when I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and in thy mother Eunica: and am assured that it dwelleth in thee also.
- 1:6
- Wherefore I warn thee that thou stir up the gift of God which is in thee, by the putting on of my hands.
- 1:7
- For God hath not given to us the spirit of fear: but of power, and of love, and of honest behavior.{soberness of mind.}|right understanding|
- 1:8
- Be not ashamed to testify our Lord, neither be ashamed of me, which am bound for his sake:|his prisoner| but suffer {thou} adversity with the gospel{gospell} also thorow|according to| the power of God,
- 1:9
- which saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not after{according to} our deeds, but for{according} his {own} purpose and grace, which grace was given us thorow Christ Jesu before the world was,
- 1:10
- but is now declared openly by the appearing of our saviour Jesu Christ, which hath put away death,|taken away the power of death| and hath brought life and immortality unto light thorow the gospel,{gospell}
- 1:11
- whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the gentiles:
- 1:12
- for the which cause I also suffer this.{these things} Nevertheless I am not ashamed. For I know whom I have believed, and am sure that he is able keep that which I have committed to his keeping against that day.
- 1:13
- See thou have the example of the wholesome words which thou heardest of me, in|concerning| faith and love which is in Jesu Christ.
- 1:14
- That {that} good thing which was committed to thy keeping, keep in|This hye charge keep thou thorow| the holy ghost which dwelleth in us.
- 1:15
- This thou knowest how that all they which are in Asia be turned from me. Of which sort are Phigellos and Hermogenes.
- 1:16
- The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:
- 1:17
- but when he was at Rome he sought me out very diligently, and found me.
- 1:18
- The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy with the Lord at that day. And in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus thou knowest very well.
The second Chapter.
- 2:1
- Thou therefore my son be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesu.
- 2:2
- And what things thou hast heard of me, many bearing witness, the same deliver to|commit unto| faithful men, which are apt to teach other.{others}
- 2:3
- Thou therefore suffer affliction as a good soldier of Jesu Christ.
- 2:4
- No man that warreth, entangleth himself with worldly business, and that because he would please him that hath chosen him to be a soldier.
- 2:5
- And though a man strive for a mastery, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
- 2:6
- The husbandman that laboureth must first receive of|enjoy| the fruits.
- 2:7
- Consider what I say. The Lord give thee understanding in all things.
- 2:8
- Remember that Jesus Christ being of the seed of David, rose again from death according to my gospel,{gospell}
- 2:9
- wherein I suffer trouble as an evil doer, even unto bonds. But the word of God was not bound.
- 2:10
- Herefore I suffer all things, for the elects' sakes, that they might also obtain that health{salvation} which is in Christ Jesu, with eternal glory.
- 2:11
- It is a true saying: If we be dead with him, we also shall live with him;
- 2:12
- If we be patient, we shall also reign with him; If we deny him, he also shall deny us;
- 2:13
- If we believe not, yet abideth he faithful; He cannot deny himself.
- 2:14
- Of these things put them in remembrance, and testify before the Lord, that they strive not about words, which is to no profit, but to pervert the hearers.
- 2:15
- Study to shew thyself laudable unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, dividing the word of truth justly.
- 2:16
- Unghostly and vain voices pass over. For they shall increase unto greater ungodliness,|As for unghostly and vain talkings, eschew them: for they help much to ungodliness|
- 2:17
- and their words shall fret even|their word fretteth| as doth a canker:{cancre} of whose number is Hymeneos and Philetos,
- 2:18
- which as concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already,{all ready} and do destroy the faith of divers persons.
- 2:19
- But the sure ground of God remaineth,|stondeth fast| and hath this seal: the Lord knoweth them that are his, and let every man that calleth on the name of Christ, depart from iniquity.
- 2:20
- Notwithstanding in a great house are not only vessels of gold and of silver: but also of wood and of earth: Some for honour, and some unto dishonour.
- 2:21
- {But} If a man purge himself from such fellows, he shall be a vessel sanctified unto honour meet for the Lord, and prepared unto all good works.
- 2:22
- Lusts of youth avoid, and follow righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with them that call on Christ the Lord with pure heart.
- 2:23
- Foolish and unlearned questions put from thee, remembering|As for foolish questions and such as teach not, put them from thee: for thou knowest| that they do but make{gender} strife.
- 2:24
- But the servant of the Lord must not|ought not to| strive: but must be peaceable unto all men,|but to be gentle unto every man| and ready{apt} to teach,
- 2:25
- and one that can suffer|forbear| the evil in meekness, and can inform them that resist, (the truth) if that God at any time will give them repentance for to know the truth:
- 2:26
- that they may wake out of sleep again, out of{come to them selves again out off}|to turn again from| the snare of the devil, which are now taken|holden in prison| of him at his will.
The .iij. Chapter.
- 3:1
- This understand,|But this shalt thou know| that in the last days shall come parlous times:
- 3:2
- For the men shall be lovers of their own selves,|men which shall hold of them selves| covetous, boasters, proud, cursed speakers, disobedient to father and mother,|their elders| unthankful, unholy,
- 3:3
- churlish,{unkind, trucebreakers} stubborn, false accusers, rioters, fierce, despisers of them which are good,
- 3:4
- traitors, heady, high minded, greedy upon voluptuousness more than the lovers of God,
- 3:5
- having a similitude|a shine| of godly living, but have denied|but denying| the power there of.{thereof:} Such abhor.|And such avoid|
- 3:6
- For of this sort are they which enter into houses,|from house to house| and bring into bondage women laden with sin, which women are led of|with| divers lusts,
- 3:7
- ever learning, and never able to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
- 3:8
- As Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, even so do these resist the truth, men they are of corrupt minds, and lewd as concerning the faith:
- 3:9
- but they shall prevail no longer. For their madness shall be uttered|foolishness shall be manifest| unto all men as theirs was:
- 3:10
- but thou hast seen the experience of my doctrine, ordinance,{fashion of living} purpose, faith, long suffering, love, patience,
- 3:11
- persecutions, and afflictions which happened unto me at Antioche, at Iconium, and at Lystra: which persecutions I suffered patiently; And from them all the Lord delivered me.
- 3:12
- Yea and all that will live godly in Christ Jesu, must suffer persecutions.
- 3:13
- But the evil men and deceivers, shall wax worse and worse, while they deceive, and are deceived themselves.|deceiving and being deceived|
- 3:14
- But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned, which also were committed unto thee seeing thou knowest of whom thou hast learned them.
- 3:15
- And forasmuch also as thou hast known holy scripture of a child, which|the same| is able to make thee wise unto health{salvation} thorow {the} faith, which is in Christ Jesu.
- 3:16
- For all scripture given by inspiration of God, is profitable to teach, to improve, to inform,{amend} and to instruct in righteousness,
- 3:17
- that the man of God may be perfect, and prepared unto all good works.
The .iiij. Chapter.
- 4:1
- I testify therefore before God, and before the Lord Jesu Christ, which shall judge quick and dead|the living and the deed| at his appearing in his kingdom,
- 4:2
- preach the word, be fervent, be it in season, or out of season. Improve, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering. {and doctrine}
- 4:3
- For the time will come, when they will not suffer wholesome doctrine: but after their own lusts shall they (whose ears itch) get them an heap of teachers,
- 4:4
- and shall turn their ears from the truth, and shall be given unto fables:
- 4:5
- But watch thou in all things, and suffer adversity, and do the work of an evangelist,|preacher of the Gospell| fulfil thine office unto the utmost. (Be sober.)
- 4:6
- For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departing is at hand.
- 4:7
- I have fought a good fight, and have fulfilled my course, and have kept the faith.
- 4:8
- From henceforth is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord that is a righteous judge shall give me at that day: not to me only: but unto all them that love his coming.
- 4:9
- Make speed to come unto me at once.
- 4:10
- For Demas hath left me, and hath loved|and loveth| this present world, and is departed into Thessalonica. Crescens is gone to Galatia, and Titus unto Dalmacea.
- 4:11
- Only Lucas is with me. Take Mark and bring him with thee, for he is necessary unto me for to minister.|profitable to the ministration|
- 4:12
- And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus.
- 4:13
- The cloak that I left at Troada with Carpus when thou comest bring with thee, and the books, but specially the parchment.
- 4:14
- Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil, the Lord reward him according to his deeds,
- 4:15
- of whom be thou ware also. For he withstood our preaching|words| sore.
- 4:16
- At my first answering for myself, no man assisted me, but all forsook me. I pray God, that it may not be laid to their charges:
- 4:17
- notwithstanding the Lord assisted|stood by| me, and strengthed me, that by me the preaching should be fulfilled to the utmost and that all the gentiles should hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
- 4:18
- And the Lord shall deliver me from all evil doing, and shall keep me unto his heavenly kingdom. To whom be praise for ever and ever Amen.
- 4:19
- Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.
- 4:20
- Erastus abode at Corinthum. Trophimos I left at Miletum sick.
- 4:21
- Make speed to come before winter. Eubolus greeteth|saluteth| thee, and Pudes, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.
- 4:22
- The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you Amen.
